Project Description
The proper personal protective equipment (PPE) can mean the difference between an employee going home at the end of the shift to enjoy their life, or them going to the emergency room during their shift and having a lifelong effect on their quality of life. By instructing all new employees of the importance of wearing the proper PPE within their first few days of employment and before they go on to the production floor can develop the habit of always wearing the proper protection. This can then lead to a safer and more safety-conscious workforce, which will in turn lower incident rates. With fewer incidents, there will be a lower cost for workers' compensation insurance premiums.
Aim
This training will aim to give all new hires the basic information they will need to do their jobs in a safe manner.
Target Audience
The target audience will be all new hires starting at Company ABC.
Delivery Options
To deliver this program there will be a mixture of online coursework and face-to-face training. This is being done to help acclimate the new hire into Company ABC’s safety culture. This will also allow the new employee to become more comfortable with a co-worker for the possibility of future questions or needs.
Instructional Need
When looking at the need for this training there are at least four shown areas for training. First, there is the OSHA requirement for training with-in manufacturing. Next, there is the need through ISO and FDA for medical device development and manufacturing. There are also the different departments along with company requirements.
This training is being developed for new employees who do not have prior knowledge of the department or company requirements. Many of the learners will come in with prior knowledge of the OSHA, ISO, and FDA requirements, but the learners will not know how Company ABC meets these requirements and standards.
For existing employees, this training will be set up as a yearly refresher program. This training will need to be reviewed each year and see where the employees are not following the standard or requirements and be reviewed from this point each year.
Expectation: New employees will be expected to explain the different needs for using the proper personal protective equipment in their daily tasks. These expectations will be expressed through the instruction of current policies and standards.
Existing employees will be expected to explain current policies as they pertain to personal protective equipment. This will be completed through the review of current policies and standards.
Both new and existing employees will be expected, through this training to help maintain and improve the safety culture at Company ABC. This will include training on how to have a conversation with a co-worker, supervisor, or manager about working in a safe manner.
Learner Analysis

· Strength: All required to lift at least 50 Lbs.
Entry Characteristics
· Most will have prior knowledge of the OSHA requirements for Personal Protective Equipment
· Learners with medical device manufacturing experience will have knowledge of the requirements of ISO and the FDA
· Most will have knowledge of the protective nature of the equipment used in training
Contextual Analysis
Orienting Context
The learner will be expected to choose, don, and wear the proper PPE for their job tasks
This will allow the learner to work through the workday without physical injury
The learner’s expectations are that by not wearing the proper PPE there will be disciplinary actions taken
PPE will protect the learner and no other action would need to be taken to prevent illness or injury
Instructional Context
This training will be scheduled within the first two days of employment. Then annually thereafter
The training room is well lighted with an option to dim if too bright
Area is quite
The room is cool in the summer; the winter room can become overheated with the door closed. Opening the door can lead to noise entering from the hallway.
Adequate seating for new employees
Accommodations may be needed for employees with physical disabilities, different learning styles, training areas, and sound delivery (earbuds, headphones).
There are two computers for the use of training for new employees along with
Technology Inventory
Company ABC’s LMS
Computers with up-to-date Microsoft Windows, Office, and Team applications
Transfer Context
This content will be used daily on the production floor
The use of PPE is supported from top management down. This is a key to success in the business
There may be issues with learning styles. Content may need to have subtitles, visual aids, and hearing devices.
Application of Learning Theories
Adult learning theory will be utilized during the development of the training. This will include opportunities for the learner to express past learning and knowledge of the use or the failure to use the proper Personal Protective Equipment.
Application of Motivational Theories
This will be accomplished through an assessment of why the learner works safely each day.
Impact of a Diverse Audience on Instruction
With a diverse audience will need to look at items like having headphones or earbuds available to listen to any video, having captions for the hearing impaired, and job aids for ease of understanding.
Goal Analysis
Original goal:
1. Given normal working conditions on the production floor employees will be able to choose, inspect, and don the needed Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Employees will be able to recognize and discuss safety concerns during their working day as they arise.
Step 2
1. Describe the needed personal protective equipment listed in the work instruction
2. Locate the needed personal protective equipment listed in the work instruction
3. Demonstrate the inspection of the personal protective equipment
4. Demonstrate how to don the personal protective equipment
5. Complete a safety observation
6. Discuss the observation with the observed
7. Explain what to look for during a safety observation
Step 3 - Sorted into Personal protective equipment then safety observation
Personal Protective equipment:
Describe the needed personal protective equipment listed in the work instruction
Locate the needed personal protective equipment listed in the work instruction
Demonstrate the inspection of the personal protective equipment
Demonstrate how to don the personal protective equipment
Observation:
Explain what to look for during a safety observation
Complete a safety observation
Discuss the observation with the observed
Step 4
As the employee begins their day, they will need to decide what personal protective equipment is needed to the task they have been assigned.
Once the proper personal protective equipment has been chosen the employee must inspect the equipment to ensure it is in working order
If the equipment does not pass the employee needs to explain how to get new items. If the equipment does pass the employee will then properly don the equipment.
Once a week the employee will spend 15-20 minutes observing other employees working. During this observation, the employee will observe the personal protective equipment and other safety items. Once the observation has been completed the employee will need to have a discussion with the observed employee about their safe working habits and personal protective equipment. This conversation should be non-confrontational and should include positive elements as well as shortcomings.
Instructional Goal
Through the development of observation skills, the employee will choose to work in a manner that is safe and to discuss safety concerns with other employees, supervisors, and managers in a non-confrontational and productive manner.
Task Analysis Method
To complete the task analysis the critical task analysis method was used. With the rise in incidents throughout the company we will develop a training process that will allow us to teach our employees how to observe each other and discuss safety issues throughout the workday. This will help in the development of the Decide to be Safe mentality we want each of our workers to be instilled with.
Task Analysis
Choose Proper PPE
Review work instruction
Choose needed PPE
Inspect needed PPE
Don PPE
Complete safety observation
Observe others working decide if others are working in a safe manner
Discuss the safe shortcomings or safe working habits, conditions, and the environment with the observed in a non-confrontational manner
Choose a positive element from the observation to start the discussion
Review negative behaviors, choices, or conditions through the possible injury, property damage, or illness that could happen.
Never get personal during the discussion.
End the discussion with a thank you.
Terminal Objectives and Enabling Objectives
Terminal Objective: The learner will choose proper personal protective equipment
Enabling Objectives:
1. Given the work instructions for the daily task the learner will choose, Inspect and don the proper PPE. (Conative Domain – Analyzing)
2. Given PPE in different states of repair the learner will choose PPE in proper working condition. (Conative Domain – Evaluating)
3. Once the working PPE has been properly chosen inspected correctly the learner will don the PPE. (Conative Domain – Applying)
Terminal Objective: Through observation be able to notice proper use of PPE, safe working choices, and conditions.
