My fascination with model trains, like many lifelong passions, began in childhood. I can still vividly picture the intricate HO scale layout my cousin's husband had, a miniature world that utterly captivated me. Those early impressions were further cemented by the impressive setups belonging to my grade school friend's dad.
My own journey into model railroading started with an HO gauge train layout in middle school and high school. It was a source of endless enjoyment, building and expanding my miniature world. But as often happens, life took over, and my trains were packed away for a time, eventually lost in my many moves.
Years later, a new chapter began, and it was all thanks to my oldest son. One Christmas, he gifted me an N gauge DC train set, and just like that, the long-dormant hobby roared back to life! What started as a simple circle quickly grew into an oval, then two independent lines, and eventually a third. The eventual shift to DCC (Digital Command Control) truly transformed things, bringing a whole new level of realism and operational flexibility.
My N gauge layout isn't just my hobby; it's become a true family affair. Birthdays, Christmases, and Father's Days often bring thoughtful gifts that help it grow – new rolling stock, buildings, scenery, and all those tiny details that truly bring a miniature world to life. Sharing this evolving passion with my family, and seeing it all come together piece by piece, is incredibly rewarding.
Another incredibly meaningful addition to my collection came from my father-in-law. He passed on an HO Gauge train set that had belonged to his uncle – a set he remembered playing with and admiring from his own childhood. There’s something truly special about incorporating such a tangible link to past generations, a piece of family history, into my own expanding HO layout. I've already added a 24"x44" area, an oval section with turnouts, and a spur track running off. You'll be able to see more of this on my HO Gauge Layout page soon!
I'm incredibly excited to share more about the progress of both my N gauge and HO gauge layouts right here on the blog! Stay tuned for regular updates, plenty of photos, and perhaps even some tips and tricks I've picked up along the way. I'd love to hear about your model train journey too!
